MI: Congressman Hoekstra Not Running 2010; Governor Run Possible

GOP Rep. Peter Hoekstra, who campaigned on a bicycle when he defeated a Republican incumbent in 1992, won’t seek re-election in 2010 and is considering a run for Michigan governor.

To get to the governor’s mansion Hoekstra would first have to beat back a crowded field of Republicans. Other names being tossed around include Reps. Candice S. Miller and Mike Rogers , Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and Domino’s Pizza chief executive David Brandon.

Lieutenant Gov. John Cherry heads up what at this point is a much smaller Democratic field. Other Democrats exploring a run include state House Speaker Andy Dillon and 1st District Rep. Bart Stupak .

I really hope the MI GOP can avoid a primary and I believe Cox and Lynn Land have proven themselves to already be able to elected statewide it would be a shame to see us lose the other 2 statewide offices we have.

Hoekstra has won each of his elections since 1992 with at least 62 percent of the vote. President George W. Bush won the district with 60 percent in 2004, but 2008 Republican nominee Sen. John McCain mustered only 51 percent of the vote in a tough electoral environment.
